  • One year after his huge setback at Nazaré that took him out of comission for several months, Cotton suffers another massive wipeout!
  • The Big Wave season is at full steam in Nazaré, Portugal and some of the best big wave surfers around the globe have been charging that infamous wave in Praia do Norte non stop during the past few weeks. Big Wave Legend, Andrew Cotton, who suffered a massive wipeout last year in which he broke his back, has been working hard on his recovery since then.

Cotton won the “WSL Biggest Wipeout Award” last season, and apparently he is now a favourite for this year’s edition, this time with no injuries and just a broken surfboard. This raw video now released and captured by local filmmaker Pedro Miranda during the November 7th Swell, shows Andrew Cotton being towed by Garrett McNamara into a wave estimated at 60-65 feet, right on the first Peak of Praia do Norte.

Cotty manages to ride the wave successfully till a bump hits his board making him fall like it was a car crash. After a long hold down, Garrett rescues Cotty right away finding him unscratched, his surfboard was found later at the beach in 2 pieces. Andrew Cotton gave the following statement to the Filmer: “All good, it’s what I needed for confidence” (…) “it’s important to know I’m strong enough to take them though. So I’m Stoked!”.

Pedro Miranda haded “Cotty looks stronger than ever, he just took one of the worst wipeouts I’ve ever watched out there, and he managed to take it strong like it was nothing, after last season injury we are all happy to see Cotty charging again with confidence like before”. On the same day, Australian Surfer Russell Bierke also performed a major wipeout that was since went viral, both the wipeouts from Bierke and Cotton are now favourite contenders for the “WSL Biggest Wipeout Award" this season, an infamous award that is never pursued by the surfers. Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.
