  • According to the association, Portugal has 493 excellent bathing áreas
  • The environmental association Zero highlighted this Thursday the record number of bathing areas in Portugal, with 14 more with excellent water quality, but demands a solution for the four cases of poor quality and for the Tagus Estuary.

    According to the Sustainable Terrestrial System - Zero Association, this year there are 601 bathing areas, of which 480 are coastal or transitional and 121 inland.

    "Based on its history and according to the legislation, including the analyzes until the end of the 2016 bathing season, there was an improvement between 2016 and 2017, with another 14 beaches of excellent quality," of which three coastal and 11 interiors, According to a report released a few months ago.

    Portugal has 24 new bathing areas, 10 of which are indoor, which the association led by Francisco Ferreira considers "particularly significant."

    Six of these are in Azores (on the island of Pico, in the municipality of Madalena do Pico), six in the central region (inland bathing waters), five in Madeira and two in the Alentejo, in Alqueva.

    In the analysis of the bathing areas classified according to the legislation, Zero concluded that "Portugal has 493 excellent bathing areas, 56 good and 13 acceptable bathing areas", with the remaining ones are not yet classified.
